The Rio Grande Southern Hotel is one of the original buildings in Dolores, CO in operation since 1893 as a hotel and boarding house. The Rio Grande Southern Railroad began operation in 1892, and this was a major stop between Durango and Rico.
THE SOUTHERN HOTEL/RIO GRANDE SOUTHERN HOTEL 101 S. Fifth St.. Dolores, CO 81323 National Register 2/23/1989, 5MT.10460
Constructed in 1893, with a 1902 addition, this is the oldest building in Dolores. The 2 1/2-story building, which took its name from the railroad line, was the first hotel in town. For many years, it was the only hotel in Dolores and the only railroad eating-house between Durango and Telluride. Since its construction, the Southern has been in continuous use as a boarding house and hotel. http://nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com/CO/Montezuma/state.html
Built by E.L. Wilbur in the German Colonial architectural style, it was operated by him until 1902. Additional owners throughout the years have added their own style and touches. Some of the owners over the years include: 1900 – Emma McGrew 1910 – William H. Wallace 1913 – Mabel Williams 1927 – Clara Johnson 1940 – B.C. Benham – who renamed it “Benny’s Hogan” 1948 – Felix Castro 1962 – Adare and Mary Ann Hill – who renamed it “The Rio Grande Southern Hotel” 1978 – Guy Wagner and his mother Florence Wagner 1983 – Thomas and Beverly Clark 1993 – Fred and Cathy Green 2006 – Susi Sieber 2008 – Sheila Cothern Trevett and Don A. King
Sheila and Don are excited to be the new caretakers of such an important piece of American and Railroad history. We look forward to serving you with traditional Southern hospitality, comfortable clean and historic accommodations, and sumptuous homemade food.');

We got the last room avail anywhere from Durango to Dolores.We orginally stoped in Durango for the night but all rooms were filled, the guy at the hotel called your hotel and was told there was ONE room left. It was late, we were very tired traveling from San Diego all day. WoW, what a old building, what a tiny room, with shared bathroom in hall, but we were happy. At midnight, about an hour after getting settled in the room, all sound asleep, the fire station in the park across the street, started the anniversary celebration early, with siren's and water canons going off at midnight and it seemed like every hour after till morning!!\r I did enjoy the visit, fished in the river, from my Stepdad's Aunts front yard,Saw his Grandparents old homestead, and celebrated with the town that night.\r I am 47 years old now, and still remember that stay like it was yesterday. Some day I will be back \r not sure I want to stay in the \"Attic\" room again, kinda spooky way back when...can you tell me if the room I stayed in a room that is being called room 5,7,or 8 in this website, and is the pray instead of room description next to those rooms, mean what I think it means??? Where is room 6?\r we stayed in the attic room that faces the town park, in the 70s there was a firestation in middle of park and right in line with our rooms window.\r Are there still lots of Morrison's that live in Dolores, Co.?
